Food businesses are governed by food safety  legislation. So its in the best interest of a food business to be up to date, current and understand what food safety legislation applies.
 
However in practice, how easy is this? How can a food business be up to date with what directly affects their business?

With the exception of the big and major food  business that have in house specialist sections that deal with this with most  food businesses, it s a struggle. Why? because its not just knowing what has changed, but how and if it applies to food businesses.
 
The majority of small to medium sized food businesses find out about food safety regulation when the local Environmental Health officer inspects their premises. If there happens to be any change in regulation the majority of small businesses will be unaware until the next time their premises is due for an inspection.
 
Those that are about to start up a food business  sometimes struggle to find out what applies to them. And because local  authorities have authorisation to prosecute and serve notices, some food  businesses are not very comfortable calling their local EHO although its the right thing to do.
 
So as a food business what can l do?  If you are busy, a small to medium sized business and not sure what to  do, you might want to approach a food safety auditor. Just as an accountant keeps you up to date of legislation that affects your finances, so will a good food safety auditor in regards to food regulations. And remember, because the auditor is working for you, the information will tailored specifically to your
business and not box standard information.
