What do you do if your local Environmental Health Officer has not inspected your food premises for a while?

Are you a food business and wonder why your local Environmental Health Officer (EHO) has not inspected your food business for a while? There could be many reasons why. Below are listed some of the reasons why you may have not been inspected yet!

Ø      Your  premises is not yet due for an inspection yet.

Ø     You  started to run a food business and never informed the local authority therefore they are  unaware that you exist.

Ø      Your  local Environmental Health Department is under staffed and have not been able to inspect you yet.

Ø     A  technical error has omitted your premises from the list of those that are due for inspection by mistake.
So what do you do?

You can always contact your local Environmental Health Department and ask why they haven't been yet.
While some businesses will do this, some will not. Some food businesses  owners would say  ' well that's
their problem if they can't come and inspect me.

Remember that whether or not your local authority comes to inspect you, as an owner you are still responsible to ensure that you run  your food business according to food safety legislation.   Be rest assured if you have been overdue for an inspection, and for some reason your local EHO (Environmental Health Officer)  has  not been, or perhaps you have not even notified them that you are trading, in
the event of a food poisoning outbreak from your premises, all necessary authorities will be present investigating.

So what do you do? Its best to be proactive whether or not your local EHO  visits you. Your food business should be operating and complying with legal requirements with or without a visit from your local EHO. Some food businesses start off well with a 5 star rating. There premises don't get inspected for one
of the reasons above. The next time the local EHO inspects, they drop to a 3 or 2 star.

This can be avoided by complying with food safety legislation yourself  or by  approaching a food safety auditor. Whether or not your local EHO inspects your premises you always remain on top because you have food safety systems in place.
